Lately, I noticed that people have been discussing or asking about colleges that are gay friendly. Well, on www.princetonreview.com I found this list:

3. New College of Florida (Sarasota, FL)
4. Macalester College (St. Paul, MN)
5. College of the Atlantic (Bar Harbor, ME)
6. Simon's Rock College of Bard Great (Barrington, MA)
7. Wellesley College (Wellesley, MA)
8. Mount Holyoke College (South Hadley, MA)
9. Bryn Mawr College (Bryn Mawr, PA)
10. Bennington College (Bennington, VT)
11. Emerson College (Boston, MA)
12. Lawrence University (Appleton, WI)
13. Harvey Mudd College (Claremont, CA)

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

Well...

Most colleges are gay-friendly. That is, unless they're religious. Religious-based schools can legally kick you out if you're gay.

I was wondering if anyone

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in sharing their specific experiences at their schools. I am starting to consider colleges and am not really interested in many on the above list and don't know how else to get the inside scoop.

Also, any experiences being out on sports teams...I'm hoping to play collegiate soccer.

Well, my best friend is an out trans-dude at New College of Florida and loves it, plus it's a public but small honors college so it's cheaper. And sunny on the bay.

OK SERIOUSLY???

WTF??? NO Seattle colleges or universities on this list??? Seattle's WAY gay friendlier than most those places!

Guide to gay college search...

...will be coming up soon on this forum (as I go through my own...)

Other schools:

* American University
* Bates College
* Brown University
* Grinnell College
* Harvard University
* Ithaca College
* New York University
* Princeton University
* Sarah Lawrence College
* Suffolk University
* Syracuse University
* Stanford University
* Tufts University
* University of Maryland
* University of Minnesota-Twin Cities
* University of Minnesota-Duluth
* University of New Hampshire
* University of Pennsylvania
* University of Puget Sound
* University of Wisconsin-Madison

Though I didn't apply to any of those. Colorado College is pretty good, as is Bard, Brandeis, and, well, Sarah Lawrence is just amazing anyway.

Here's a website for more tips, and I have a few more from my own references that I'll type up when I'm not dead tired.

congrats, you guys are way

congrats, you guys are way more accomplished than i was in college searching... try not to stress too much, even if a school isn't known for how "gay friendly" it is, it will most likely have a GSA and things... unless it's a really religious school, or a really tiny one in the middle of bumblefuck. and i believe hampton in virginia still doesn't have a gsa, i remember reading something about that... hope that was at least somewhat helpful.

really.. no seattle schools?

hyacinthus is right... you want a gay friendly college town come to seattle!!! seattle u (despite its catholic background), the university of washington, western washington university, evergreen state, all these schools have great LGBT networks!!

not suprisingly, one of the other most LGBT friendly campuses i have found was the university of san francisco... i fell in love with that school!!

i am actually going down to portland for college... i am going to lewis and clark college... when i went on my recruiting trip for soccer i really noticed how gay friendly the campus was... the GSA is a really big deal on campus... the number of gays/lesbians was really comforting to me... if anyone has any questions about the school (or any other college on the west coast... trust me, i've been to a ton of them thanks to soccer) i would love to answer your questions!

ask away!

Wow, I didn't realize

Wow, I didn't realize there'd be this many responses @.@ Thanks everyone for helping everyone else ^.^

I didn't think so many colleges would be gay friendly because I told my older brother that I was helping a student try to get a GSA started, and so he gave me a huge lecture about the legal and social problems I'll run into because of it. He even scared me into thinking that starting a GSA could get my diploma pulled because I can get kicked out of school for causing a disturbance.

He told me about the homophobia at his university. He was in the play The Laramie Project, which is about a gay boy that was murdered. A lot of people protested it, but it still played. Then, a student tried to start a GSA at the begining of the school year. He had to fight and argue with the unviersity until he got his club towards the end of the school year. There were only 5 members because of fear.

Because of my brother's story, I wasn't aware so many colleges were so gay friendly. I just found that list on princetonreview while I was looking up info on my choice colleges and considered it a treasure to share. But, guess I'm wrong, but it never hurts to try to help.

no Humboldt State?

I am suprised that Humboldt State (HSU in CA) is not on the list.
They're marching band, the Marching Lumberjacks sings the lumberjack song (if you have not heard it, you MUST ook it up on youtube) at all the football games, and there are great GLBT events going on all year.

milee13's picture

I suppose you could say that

I suppose you could say that Humboldt State is somewhat gay friendly...but there are schools out there that are much moreso. The area, overall is not the most gay friendly, and it's just a tiny place in general.

And, I think I might know who you are.

What about University of California system? The whole system is pretty gay friendly.

...

I studied at UCSD and I found it pretty gay-okay. THey had a nice LGBTQI Center and community, and offered several queer-related classes.

I guess colleges in AMerica are in general more gay-friendly than many other social settings. that's why so many people here are like: "Why is MY college not on the list? It is so gay friendly!"

Glad to hear.

Glad to hear so many US colleges are gay-friendly. Though I'm going to University here in Ontario, so I won't have a problem. Just wanted to add that (obviously) I think all Canadian colleges and unis would be very gay-friendly. I know Queen's (where I want to go) has a huge gay community.

Used to be it was a man's world and a woman's place was in the home...
they can kiss that shit goodbye.

Other then queens do you know any really really gay friendly colleges in southern ONT??

I think U of T (University of Toronto) has a pretty good gay community, but I don't know of any specific others. I'm sure if you went to the websites of Ontarian (sp?) universities, they'd show you a list of their clubs or give you an option to write them for their pamphlets (in which they say their clubs). All the info I have, sorry.

I don't know a ton about

I don't know a ton about specific clubs, but I would suggest going online and looking under the activities/organizations tabs at those various sites, and then emailing the GSA presidents or whatnot. If you're going to be an art major, especially at art school, I'm sure you'll be quite fine. Emerson, Hampshire, and Bennington all give me pretty good gaydar.

England?

How about gay friendly univeristies in England/Britain. Almost too late for me, and It's probably not the best website to ask, being mostly American, but still, anyone know anything?

i would say manchester and

i would say manchester and brighton are the most gay friendly but i think that pretty much all places are quite accepting, unless u go somewhere in the sticks like derby lol

Purchase College is VERY gay friendly!

And also very artsy. So if you're into acting, dance, music, writing or visual arts... check it out. The gay community pretty much rules the school.
