Last book you've read?
Well this subforum's a little anaemic and unloved. No comments for a fortnight, for shame. Anyway, the question is simple enough:
What was the last book (fiction or non-fiction) you've read?
Was it any good?
The last book I read was 'I am Legend' by Richard Matheson. A friend handed it to me in assembly the other day and told me I needed to read it. This is because our friendship is underpinned by a mixture of zombie movies or anything else in which plagues of the undead predominate and Morrissey. But he was right it was a good read.

The last book I read was
The last book I read was "The Great Gatsby" by F Scott Fitzgerald. I read it for english and didn't like it. It goes to ways: either the person loves it, or absolutely hates it. I didn't think it was all that great of a novel; I didn't like it's theme or the way it was presented, or anything really.
The last book I read and actually liked [outside of English class, because we've read quite a bit in that class] is "The Reader" by Bernhard Schlink.
Gatsby
I can never understand why people don't like Great Gatsby after they've studied it (so basically I'm afraid I'm a person that loves it). We spent about three months last year on Gatsby and we still hadn't anywhere near exhausted the complexity of Fitzgerald's use of language and exploration of the novels themes. It's not a great read necessarily, but it is a great novel. Studying that book provided the best English classes I've ever had. By the end we were all a bit obsessive about the book- even the ones who disliked it.
What was it specifically you disliked?
Also, just wondering, how many books a year on average do you study in English?
Oh we studied the crap out
Oh we studied the crap out of its motifes and symbols and depth, and I don't know, I just didn't like the way the novel was presented. I can definetely appreciate what Fitzgerald did in signifying different characters with different objects [ie Gatsby and the exterior and interior of his house] and all that crap. He definetely put a lot of shit in there to create depth [contrasting characters, TJ Eckleberg, the green light, Gatsby's wealth, etc etc etc] and I really do think that it was interesting that he did that, but maybe not what he did it with... you know?
But we had "teacher of the day" for a two weeks. Students got into groups of 3 or a little more and we had to make presentations [one chapter per group.] Mine got Chapter 8, where Wilson gets owned in the face. That class does a lot of group activity so for ours we had them copy change a song [or write their own] based on a character or symbol or happening in the chapter. And as an example at the beginning of class we did copy change of "Mamma Mia" by Abba [I played guitar and we all sang, it was great] for chapter summary. Needless to say, it was fantastic. Then we had discussion and yadda yadda.
Well, since it's AP english more reading is required and all that. We've read Oedipus Rex, Macbeth [hated it], Huckleberry Finn, The Great Gatsby, and had to read 3 books over summer before going into the class, and 1 book over winter break. And currently we are reading Grapes of Wrath.

Sorry, I know I sounded like a certifiable arse but Gatsby provokes strange emotions in our English class.
I was just wondering about the number of books because for both GCSE and A level thinking about it it doesn't really seem like we read that many texts.
We studied two plays and two novels over two years at GCSE and poetry from the anthology compiled by the exam board. And in AS year we study one poetry option (we did Chaucer), one play by Shakespeare, one 20th century play and one novel. Then for A level year we study another poetry option (Chaucer again), a pre-20th century play (Shakespeare again ), two more texts for the coursework option and then sit a synoptic paper with unseen materials.
I got the impression (rightly apparently) in your system you read a greater breadth of materials. I don't mind our system because you do study in a lot of depth- but it would be nice maybe to read a bit more in class.
I would imagine you guys
I would imagine you guys study them more in depth than we do. Our class is about analyze, and then writing about it. [We write so many essays it's nuts.] So we have to read as much as we can to learn to analyze more and write about more topics, to prepare for the AP test and crap.
We just finished a poetry unit too, which I rather enjoyed. Dickinson, mostly. [We had to do group presentations on a poem by Emily Dickinson, and we made a video and made it completely emo. It's on youtube.com] But we got to write a lot of our own stuff, which was cool.

but i must say, "People of Paper" is just a beautiful novel. (i read that right before "The Bridge of San Luis Rey"
absolutely gorgeous.
i highly recommend it, and for some reason it strikes me as a novel that you would enjoy.
"The Tale of Desperaux" by
"The Tale of Desperaux" by Kate DiCamillo. I've read it about 5 times before. It's the story of a mouse, a princess, some soup, and a spool of thread. Lovely.
Before that was Megatokyo volume 4... And before that "Just In Case." That was a cool book. It was about a kid who thought Fate was out to get him... if only he really knew. ^-^

Just finished "A Thousand Names for Joy" by Byron Katie, and "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" by Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., M.D.
In the middle now of reading "Man in the Middle" by John Amaechi (for reasons that will be evident soon enough), which I should finish this weekend, then "Rose of No Man's Land" by Michelle Tea.

last one i finished was uncharted, which was really good till the last 50 pages, when it turned the entire thing into a metaphore for life and how to not go to hell basicly. and im not a religious person, and this was said nowhere on teh cover, so i didtn appreciate it being thrown on me. then i started 'how i live now' which was horrible, and had no grammer at all. never read it. now im reading 'alabama moon' which is really good, its about a kid who's living on his own cause he thinks the government is out to get him

i just took a break from reading, but my last book was "next" by some fella, and atm i'm reading "stalker" by faye someone... i'm yet to read a book i don't find at least interesting....spose it's the advantage of reading dad's leftovers, i get mini book reviews before i read it.

last book was 'drugstore cowboy'. it was rather good. not necesarily profound or anything, but i liked it. its apparently a really good movie too, though i have yet to see it. before that it was 'me talk pretty some day' which was really random and interesting and amusing (hes gay by the way).

Last book was a biography of Hugo Chavz. The writer thought the sun came out of his arse, which made it ridiculously uneven, but kinda interesting

I can't remember the author,it was only a couple of weeks ago that I read it though.Basically it's about the limits of science,and the science of limits.Was an excellent read.

Currently reading The Other Boleyn Girl, which is fabulous despite the glaring historical innacuracies. an insanely delicious read though....
to be honest, that's the first book i've truly read in a while...my attention span's so short (thank you tv and internet) that my brain can't really focus on a book. that and i'm hard pressed to find something that will interest me in this two-bit town.
any suggestions?

The last book I read was the third volume of the queer manga Gravitation. I recommend Gravitation to everyone. It's really funny. Shuichi (the main character) is such an idiot. I love watching his antics. :)

The Jungle
the last book i read was The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, which was for english. it was pretty interesting for a while, goes through all the corruption and devastation of the Gilded Age of US History, but then it gets kinda slow and repetitive after a while. still a better book than most that i've read for a book report this school year.
