30 Days about Same Sex Parenting

msquared's picture

HOLY CRAP. Does anyone watch 30 Days? It's a TV show on FX hosted by Morgan Spurlock, the documentarian who unleashed the film "Supersize Me" upon the world. The show basically puts a person completely out of their element for 30 days. The elements are always controversial, however. Examples include putting a hunter in a family of animal rights activists, a Christian living in a Muslim home, and this week's episode about an extremely conservative Mormon living with same sex parents.

The show had me screaming at the television. The Mormon woman was SUCH A BITCH. Ugh. Even after 30 days with an absolutely adorable family with gay parents, she still would rather have kids more or less fending for themselves in decrepit foster homes than living with loving gay parents. She just made me SO pissed...I can't believe there are people out there who are such hypocrites--they claim that they follow the teachings of a loving God, yet they're so selfish that they care more about defending their own views than actually helping people. I kind of thought helping people was the priority.

(And P.S.: I'm totally not bashing religion, in case you got the wrong impression! Just bashing the hypocrites...this world could use less of those, I'm sure.)

Yeah...

It was pretty amazing how incredible self-righteous she was, and downright rude and offensive to everyone she met. And then she'd freak out when she felt like people were against her and ganging up on her.

This is the only episode I remember where the person has no change during the experience. I was glad at the end that the gays finally said they didn't see any reason to keep in touch or have anything to do with her... and, once again, she's clueless and seems shocked that he would say that, because she believes what she believes and he just believes what he believes... the same tired nonsense she said all the time.

And how she kept admitting she didn't know anything about gay parenting statistics or anything else, but she'd still be self-righteous about her ill-informed and, honestly, stupid opinions.

I'm glad she packed her magic underwear and left that poor couple alone after 30 days...

Mhm.

I think the most ironic part of it was when she agreed not to be friends. She's more fervent in her religious views on homosexuality than on kindness and compassion, yet I'm sure the Book of Mormon places more emphasis on the latter. It goes to prove that she really is more dedicated to herself than to her God.

What a bitch. It makes me so

What a bitch. It makes me so happy to not be her friend, and to not be like her...

um...

I haven't seen the episode in question (I don't think my house even gets the right channel for the show), but... can I ask what good it does to bash this woman?

I'm hoping everybody is just letting off steam!

Hmm...

I'm not bashing her as much as using her to represent every person who uses religion as an alternative to conscious thought. Plus, it's always grating when people keep trying to say how much they support you personally, but God tells them to stand in the way of your every right, dream, and happiness. You know, I'd rather you just *not* support me, cuz at the end of the day, that's all it is... :-)

A little bit of dishing

A little bit of dishing never hurt anybody. =] And if you saw the episode, you'd want to talk about it, too. It was...frightening.

I really was sad, because

I really was sad, because she didn't change at all, almost gets worse... and she always just continues repeating the same things with stuff like, I don't understand why god makes it a sin but did..... but, why not just watch and see for yourself...

Hulu really is a great site....

Thanks for putting that

Thanks for putting that video marco_polo... I pisses me off how she doesnt change at all. But it does make me realize that the other side is kind of going through what we are, people being against what you believe and trying to change laws into something you believe is wrong.

I think ...

I almost feel that they started the argument on the wrong point. You cant argue why gay parenting is bad before you argue on why some people think being gay is bad.

I mean, she kept saying that the main reason she didn't like gay marriage was that it showed that the "gay lifestyle" was o.k., and that topic was never addressed. It was just like gay is bad from her, and no opposition to that main idea from them.

That argument might have happened in real life, we can't know because of editing and how they presented it on the tv shows, but I don't blame her for not changing her views if no one showed her the main reasons her views were wrong, that being gay was not an evil choice and a sin.

jeff's picture

Err...

If she thinks gay is wrong because of her religious views, I can't imagine it would have mattered much. But yeah, she is anti-gay in general, and therefore against gay adoption as a result. I don't think there are going to be any people who are accepting of gay people and against gay parenting, really.

Actually, you'd be

Actually, you'd be surprised. Well them being against gay parenting shows that they're not entirely comfortable with gay people. But for some reason people seem to think that gay parents would be bad for a kid whose growing up because they would have two fathers or two mothers and it would be a "lopsided" view of sorts. That reasoning doesn't make sense to me. My dad alone is very "fatherly" and "motherly". So to speak. And my mom is more of older-sisterly. I don't think she ever matured past 16. But that's another matter entirely.

I was annoyed with the woman though because she felt like it was okay to force her moral views onto everyone else, without even understanding the issue. She saw those kids, and that they were happy. And loved very much by their dads. But her mind kept running back to "eww, gay makes it wrong."

And I think they probably should have addressed the homophobia issue first. It was probably too much of a jump.

msquared's picture

I'm really surprised no one

I'm really surprised no one asked her about single parents. They could've NAILED her on that one. If every kid needs a mother and father, why is it that you're not fighting the rights of single parents to have kids? Aren't there more single parents than there are gay ones? (That question actually isn't rhetorical...I really don't know, lol).
